  • Almost 250,000 Australians took up multiple jobs in the June 2021 quarter compared to the June 2020 quarter.
  • Secondary jobs soared 33% in Australia over the 2020–2021 financial year.
  • Around 762,000 Australians joined the video game industry in 2020.

Lockdowns throughout the pandemic have left Aussies with an abundance of time on their hands and limited options of things to do. While some Australians have taken on extra work, others have entered the world of gaming.

According to data from the ABS, 867,900 Aussies held multiple jobs in the 2021 June quarter, up 39% from the same period a year earlier.

Administration and support services, education and training and arts and recreation jobs were the sectors with the largest increase in multiple job take up.

While some Aussies chose to increase their employment workload, others took to gaming. First time gamers soared 29% over the 2020–2021 financial year. According to Alienware, 762,000 Aussies joined the video game industry in 2020.

As the multi-billion dollar gaming industry continues to grow and with government incentives kicking in, like a 30% refundable tax offset for video game development available from 1 July 2022, maybe next year some Aussie gamers will turn their hobby into a secondary job.
